Come play with color, pattern, and shape in this fun, hands-on painting workshop with local artist Paula Brett!

We’ll start by covering a 12" x 12" canvas with colorful patterns, lines, shapes, and marks. There’s no need to overthink it — this part is all about experimenting and having fun.

Once your background is finished, you’ll choose a design to work with. You can use one of the templates I provide, or draw your own design.

Then comes the fun part: instead of painting your design, you’ll paint around it. By filling in the negative space, your design begins to emerge from the patterned background, creating a bold and unexpected finished painting.

Along the way, we’ll play with:

• Color and pattern

• Lines, shapes, and repeated marks

• Choosing a design that works with your background

• Negative space and contrast

• Creating a strong, contemporary composition

No painting or drawing experience is needed. I’ll guide you through each step, and you’ll have plenty of room to make the painting your own.

You’ll leave with a finished 12" x 12" original painting and a fun new approach to creating art through pattern, design, and negative space.
